GeoDecisions, Gannett Fleming’s geospatial information technology division, is enhancing an already state-of-the-art traffic noise model (TNM) calculation tool by creating an immersive user interface (UI). Through a two-prong effort, our geographic information system (GIS) professionals are embedding 2-D and 3-D GIS inside a stand-alone application for individual Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) work stations and throughout three software extensions. The latter process will span multiple computer-aided design and GIS platforms.

Our innovative UI approach was necessary when FHWA updated its noise model, an application required for new road projects that receive federal funding. Each UI will allow traffic engineers, roadway designers, and noise specialists to better collaborate on roadway designs and present projects such as noise abatement plans to the public.

What We Did

Gannett Fleming is in a unique position to help FHWA on this project because we are bringing together GIS technologists who are developing the UI and noise experts from our Environmental Acoustics business unit who are using the TNM software. This level of service reduces FHWA risk normally associated with highly specialized application development.

On the development side, the stand-alone application requires UI features such as tools, toolbars, docking and floating windows, and dialog boxes in addition to 3-D and 2-D map controls. We are creating separate software extensions to access the TNM through Esri’s ArcGIS®, Autodesk’s AutoCAD®, and Bentley’s MicroStation® platforms used by most departments of transportation and traffic consultants.
