(Harrisburg, Pa.) The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) has named Todd Szymkowski, PE, PTOE, the chair of its Ethics Committee. Based in Gannett Fleming’s Madison, Wisconsin, office, he serves as a transportation systems management and operations manager.

Szymkowski’s previous experience with ITE landed him the role of Ethics Committee Chair. He was involved with the first Leadership ITE class in 2014 and was asked to participate on a panel related to generational ethics at an annual ITE meeting. He also contributed to the ITE Standing Committee on Ethics before being asked to take on his new position.

Szymkowski has more than 20 years of industry experience in management, research, planning, design, construction inspection, and transportation project evaluation. He also provides traffic operations, intelligent transportation systems, freight operations, and Transportation Systems Management and Operations services.

ITE is an international educational and scientific association of transportation engineers, transportation planners, consultants, educators, and researchers who are responsible for meeting mobility and safety needs. In his role as the chairperson, Todd will speak to ethical subjects related to professional practice, the multi-generational workplace, emerging transportation technology, and increasing globalization.

“An ethics committee is more important now than ever,” said Szymkowski. “An increasingly diverse global workforce creates a number of ethical issues related to cultural differences, and new connected and autonomous vehicle technologies also bring a variety of ethical questions and concerns. I plan to work with a group of very dedicated professionals to address these matters facing the transportation engineering profession.”

Szymkowski has won a number of ITE awards during his career, including the 2004 Wisconsin Section Young Professional Award, the 2011 Wisconsin Section Martin Bruening Technical Paper Award, and the 2013 Wisconsin Section Distinguished Service Award. He also is an active member of the Transportation Research Board and the International Municipal Signal Association.

Szymkowski holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a master of science in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
