(New York, N.Y.) Global infrastructure firm Gannett Fleming announced today that Michael A. Shamma, PE, has joined the company as the Northeast Transportation DOT/tolls business line leader. Based in the New York City office, he is responsible for guiding the firm’s DOT/tolls business strategy and growth across the northeastern U.S., serving as project director and manager on key projects, and supporting the company’s broader transportation business line initiatives.

Shamma brings nearly 30 years of transportation experience to Gannett Fleming. Most recently, he served as president of a mid-size construction management and engineering company based in New York. Prior to this role, Shamma served as chief engineer of the New York State Thruway Authority and Canal Corporation where he was responsible for a $1.5 billion, multi-year capital program encompassing 2,400 lane miles of interstate, 809 bridges, and 1,025 building facilities, as well as 524 canal system miles. During his tenure, he served as ombudsman for the new $3.9 billion Tappan Zee Bridge replacement in Tarrytown, New York, the largest bridge project in North America.

Shamma also worked with the New York State Department of Transportation for 24 years, where he held progressively senior positions including Region 2 director. In this position he was responsible for the safety and integrity of the region’s six-county transportation system that included 2,800 lane miles of state highway, nearly 800 bridges, and other significant infrastructure. He also served as chief engineer and led all activities of the Engineering Division to ensure the delivery of an annual $2.2 billion capital construction program.

“Mike is a passionate and driven leader, and brings tremendous operational expertise to our transportation business line,” said James R. Laurita, P. E., senior vice president and director of the Northeast Region. “His deep experience in one of the nation’s most critical transportation corridors enables him to deliver proven leadership, technical innovation, and best-in-class solutions to our DOT and tolling clients across the U.S., and the northeast in particular.”

Shamma holds a master of engineering in transportation engineering and a bachelor of science in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a registered professional engineer in five states, including New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland and Florida, as well as Washington, D.C. He serves on the board of trustees of the Arab American Association of Engineers & Architects, Tri-State Chapter; vice chair for government affairs for the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACECNY); board member of the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program of Greater New York; and is a charter member of the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE), Central New York Section.
