Linda Kaplan, PE, a bridge engineer based in Gannett Fleming’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, office, received the Recent Alumni Award from the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Alumni Association on Oct. 10, 2014.
The award recognizes CMU alumni who earned a noteworthy professional achievement within 10 years of receiving their degree or provided outstanding service to the university.
“Linda Kaplan is not only dedicated to serving as a trusted advisor to our clients, she is committed to improving the engineering profession by mentoring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics students,” said John Kovacs, PE, PMP, D.GE, Gannett Fleming senior vice president, Midwest regional director, and CMU alumna. “We’re proud of her efforts, and honored to see the university recognize her with this award.”
Kaplan earned a bachelor of science in civil engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007 and serves as an advisor to the CMU chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). She also is a member of the CMU Environmental Engineering Alumni Advisory Council and received the Alumnus Achievement Award from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at CMU in 2012.
The ASCE Pittsburgh Section named Kaplan the 2013 Young Engineer of the Year. She is the current vice president of the ASCE Pittsburgh Section’s younger members forum, a member and past-chair of its Outreach Committee, and a member of the organization’s Program Committee. In addition to ASCE, she is active in the Structural Engineering Institute on the local and national levels.
A Pittsburgh resident who is active in the community, Kaplan also volunteers with the ACE (architecture, construction, and engineering) Mentor Program. She serves on the group’s Project Planning Committee and is the lead mentor for two student sessions. Through ACE Mentor, professionals like Kaplan work with high school students and inspire them to pursue careers in design and construction.
Kaplan also has a master of science in structural engineering from Lehigh University. She has been a part of the design team for many of Gannett Fleming’s Western Pennsylvania bridge and tunnel projects, including the Squirrel Hill Tunnel Rehabilitation project in Pittsburgh, the Hulton Bridge Replacement in Allegheny County, and the Mon/Fayette Expressway project in Washington and Fayette counties.
