Hadjiyane Wins NYWEA Environmental Engineer Award

(Woodbury, New York) Stephen Hadjiyane, PE, BCEE, received the New York Water Environment Association’s top honor in recognition of his long standing commitment and contributions to the field of environmental engineering. The 2016 Environmental Engineer Award was presented at the NYWEA Awards Luncheon held during their 89th Annual Meeting.

Hadjiyane, vice president and manager of Gannett Fleming’s NY Water Business Line, is responsible for managing environmental water/wastewater projects, is on the firm’s National Water Practice Leadership Team (PLT), and serves as the Technical Working Groups Director. He has led numerous wastewater treatment plant upgrades that reduce nitrogen and improve water quality in Long Island Sound and is currently directing upgrades at the Nassau County Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant in East Rockaway, N.Y., and the Suffolk County Forge River Watershed sewer project on Long Island.

Two of Hadjiyane’s projects received American Council of Engineering Companies of New York awards in its annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s Cross River Pumping Station was honored with a Gold Award in 2015 and the Grass Island Wastewater Treatment Plant’s project was named a Platinum Award winner in 2014.

Hadjiyane earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from SUNY Buffalo and his M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Manhattan College. He is also a Board Certified Environmental Engineer and a Professional Engineer in New York. He is vice chair of the L.I. Chapter Board of Directors and a member of the Select Society of Sanitary Sludge Shovelers (SSSSS). He is committee chair of the Scholarship Program and a co-founder of the Young Professional and Operators committee. He supports the Operators Challenge Team. Hadjiyane has been a member of NYWEA for more than 20 years.   

NYWEA promotes sustainable clean water quality management through science, education and training. Founded in 1929, the association and its over 2,500 members protect and enhance New York’s water resources.
