Gannett Fleming sponsored the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) 2018 Innovation Contest, demonstrating the firm’s commitment to inspire younger generations to pursue careers in STEM.
In its third year, the contest showcases the top projects, theories, and ideas from students and engineers who apply industry knowledge to develop creative concepts that can improve our nation’s infrastructure. Contest winners also had the opportunity to exchange ideas with industry leaders during the contest celebration event.
Gannett Fleming Chairman and CEO Bob Scaer, PE, presented on the CEO panel, “Innovation in Civil Engineering.” Scaer represented the firm at the event in Reston, Virginia, on June 27-28, along with Brian Smith, commercial solutions vice president of GeoDecisions®, Gannett Fleming’s geospatial technology division.
ASCE’s Innovation Contest aligns with Gannett Fleming’s culture of innovation. The firm aggressively promotes and facilitates innovation among employees to ensure delivery of valuable solutions that solve clients’ most complex challenges and improve the communities they serve. The Gannett Fleming Collaborative Research and Innovation Center is an in-house resource for employees to exercise their creative ideas with access to funding opportunities and research tools. The firm also offers multiple annual internal contests to promote the sharing of innovative solutions, including the Innovation Challenge, the President’s Innovation Award, and the President’s Project Team Award.
ASCE’s Innovation Contest is a segment of the organization’s Grand Challenge, an initiative that encourages the industry to integrate innovative ideas with the goal of reducing America’s infrastructure lifecycle costs by 50 percent by 2025.
