Engineering-News Record (ENR) selected two Gannett Fleming projects as winners of its 2018 Regional Best Project competition. The Interstate 70, Section T20 Reconstruction and Widening Project won the ENR MidAtlantic Award of Merit in Highways/Bridges and the Springfield Railcar Assembly Facility Design-Build Project won the ENR New England Best Project in Manufacturing.
The I-70, Section T20 Reconstruction and Widening Project resulted in a first-of-its-kind diverging diamond interchange (DDI) for Pennsylvania. Under contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Gannett Fleming and subconsultant Tri-State Design and Development performed the design on the $64-million project. The DDI, constructed by the Golden Triangle Construction Company, replaced a substandard cloverleaf interchange, creating a safer and more efficient connection between 1-70 and Route 19. The DDI interchange and an added travel lane in each direction on I-70 improve capacity and safety. The project has received numerous awards and recognitions, including a No. 7 ranking on the Roads & Bridges 2017 Top 10 Roads list, the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors’ 2018 Community Connection Award, the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Northeast Region 2018 Project of the Year Award, and the ASHE Southwest Penn 2017 Project of the Year.
Gannett Fleming served as the lead engineer and architect for the $62-million Springfield Railcar Assembly Facility Design-Build Project. The firm’s responsibilities included planning, design, construction administration, and commissioning for the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation’s North American operations hub. The facility allows for on-time delivery of railcars assembled for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and created nearly 150 permanent new jobs. Previous awards for this project include an American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Massachusetts Silver Award and a 2018 ACEC National Recognition Award.
ENR will recognize the I-70 project at the ENR MidAtlantic Best Projects Awards luncheon on Nov. 7 in Baltimore and the Springfield Railcar Assembly Facility project at the ENR New England awards presentation on Dec. 12 in Boston.
