The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently won the Project of the Year award from the Intelligent Transportation Society of Pennsylvania (ITSPA) for the deployment of Gannett Fleming’s Traffic Management Center (TMC) Boot Camp.
The boot camp’s 10-day training sessions, first held in July 2018, help new PennDOT TMC employees understand the goals and operational standards of the TMC, which serves as the hub for transportation operations. Trainees receive a comprehensive review of traffic management software and the ability to observe and perform TMC functions with a mentor.
“Establishing a statewide training plan has been a priority,” said Eric Sponsler, PennDOT traffic operations unit manager. “Working collaboratively with the consultant staff from the TMC has allowed this initiative to become a reality. The TMC training staff worked extremely hard to create each training session and continues to work equally as hard delivering the content and making modifications to best assist each class. The award was very much deserved, and I am excited to continue building on the training program.”
“Data flows quickly in and out of these information nerve centers, and TMC operators make important decisions every day that impact incident response, traffic flow, safety, and efficiency,” said Eric Rensel, Gannett Fleming vice president and senior transportation operations manager. “We are honored to assist PennDOT and look forward to collaborating on the creation of additional courses to build upon this strong foundation.”
Gannett Fleming provides TMC operation support through Gannett Fleming Management Services, which leads nationally recognized transportation operations centers, TMCs, and incident management programs.
