(Harrisburg, Pa.) In recognition of her inspirational leadership in the transportation industry, as well as her tireless dedication to the advancement of women, Gannett Fleming’s Esther McGinnis received the Ethel S. Birchland Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation on Sept. 23.

McGinnis’ 38-year career is a tapestry of determination, achievement, mentorship, allyship, and unprecedented success. She began as a designer and drafter in the oil and gas industry and became Gannett Fleming’s first female and first African American member of the board of directors. She is a founding member of the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Steering Committee as well as the Connected Women at Gannett Fleming™ employee resource group.

When asked what advice she’d share, McGinnis said, “I’d tell junior professionals that there are adversity and challenges everywhere - their goal shouldn’t be to avoid or run away from professional difficulties. Instead, build up your strength of character and intellectual capacity to face challenges and excel in those tough situations. That will set you apart personally and professionally.”

McGinnis currently serves as the MidAtlantic Region director, the largest region at Gannett Fleming and home to more than 600 employees. She holds an Associate Degree in science from Gateway Technical Institute and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering technology from Point Park College.
