Barrett Named ASCE Maryland Section Engineer of the Year

(Baltimore, Md.) For the past 35 years, W. Arthur Barrett, II, PE, has made significant contributions to the civil engineering industry. Both his leadership and experience earned him the 2015 Civil Engineer of the Year award from the Maryland Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Located in the Baltimore, Maryland, office, Barrett is a Gannett Fleming senior vice president and director of the firm’s Mid-Atlantic Region.

The ASCE Maryland Section’s Civil Engineer of the Year award is presented to a civil engineer whose sustained efforts have advanced of the profession and provided a service to the community during the year.

A veteran civil engineer, Barrett oversees employees in seven offices in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and the District of Columbia. In addition, he serves as a senior transportation project manager, managing highway and transit projects; structural/condition inspections; and the structural design of bridges, buildings, drainage structures, and tanks.

Barrett is the project manager for several current and recently completed high-profile projects throughout both Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region, including the Maryland Transit Administration’s Purple Line Corridor Study and Kirk Bus Facility Modernization project in Baltimore.

“It’s truly an honor to receive this award from an organization like the ASCE Maryland Section, which does so much to advance the civil engineering profession in the state,” Barrett said.

A former president of the ASCE Maryland Section, Barrett has been a member of the society for more than 20 years. He has fulfilled leadership roles in other professional organizations, including serving as the current vice president of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Maryland and the 2014 president of the Engineering Society of Baltimore.

A graduate of Clarkson University, Barrett holds a bachelor of science in civil and environmental engineering. He is a registered professional engineer in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia.
