Engineering News-Record (ENR) recently released its National 2018 Best of the Best Projects winners and selected the Gannett Fleming Springfield Railcar Assembly Facility Design-Build Project for the Best of the Best Manufacturing award.

More than 820 project teams submitted their work for the Best of the Best awards, and judges selected the winners based on teamwork, safety, overcoming challenges, innovation, and quality.

Gannett Fleming provided design, planning, construction administration, and commissioning services for the $62 million, 204,000-square-foot railcar assembly facility located in Springfield, Massachusetts. As the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation North American operations hub and China’s first venture into the high-end railway transportation equipment industry in the U.S., this state-of-the-art facility is a first of its kind with international significance.

The completed facility provides on-time delivery of railcars to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, created 150 new permanent jobs, and rehabilitated a highly visible abandoned manufacturing site in the Springfield area.

The project recently won the ENR New England Best Project in Manufacturing, the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Massachusetts Silver Award and a ACEC National Recognition Award.

ENR will recognize this project at the upcoming ENR Awards of Excellence Gala on March 21 in New York.
